Join Conversations on Dress for their next installment of As Seen at Symposium, as host Tina Bates speaks with scholars Jo Jenkinson and Ginger Stanciel.

Tina Bates, 2023’s CSA Betty Kirke Excellence in Research Award Winner, presented On the Margins: Convict Dress at the Kingston Penitentiary, 1890-1920 at CSA’s 2023 Symposium. Bates is the retired curator in history at the Canadian Museum of History. She is Editor Emerita of Dress and served as Editor-in-Chief 2014 - 2022. Her book, A Cultural History of the Nurses Uniform received the CSA Millia Davenport Publication award in 2013. She has also received the Scholar's Roundtable Honor in 2008. Her interests are dress, gender, identity and modernity.

Jo Jenkinson is Reader and Deputy Head at the Manchester Fashion Institute, Manchester Metropolitan University, UK. Her research examines dress, gender, and youth culture - the lived experience of young people and how dress relates to identity formation, but also memories of youth and how youth lives with us through dress and music. Jo works collaboratively, across disciplines, using creative methods that position dress as a conduit or method through which new narratives are told. She is a member of the Manchester Centre for Youth Studies (MCYS), founder of the Portrait Youth project and Co-I on the AHRC funded network Locating Menswear. Jenkinson presented Dandy Style and Portrait Youth at Symposium.

Ginger Stanciel is an independent scholar and presented two works at Symposium: Dress, Power, and Identity in Italian Renaissance Portraiture and “This Uniform Doesn’t Mean Anything”: Black World War II Soldiers, Uniforms, and Racial Discrimination in the United States.

Join CSA & Tina Bates to learn more about Jo, Ginger, and their work. Stay tuned for later installments of As Seen at Symposium, with dates to be announced!
